These readings, accomplished through underestimating certain data and privileging other data, lead perusers to embrace a skeptical demeanor toward specific gatherings and political belief systems. Among Orwell’s welcomed readings are the propensity of socialist governments to get degenerate, the maltreatment of broad position and the viability of promulgation. All through â€Å"Animal Farm†, Orwell drives perusers to see socialism critically by proposing that socialist governments are dishonest and damage moral standards. Socialism is tons of opportunity and equity. Without a doubt, when Old Major paints distinctive pictures of creatures living openly, he additionally calls attention to that â€Å"no creature should ever tyrannize over his own kind† and that â€Å"all creatures are equal† (p.6). Be that as it may, later in the novella, the pigs, having built up themselves as the high society, rule. The pigs power different creatures to work interminably while they lead lives of extravagance. Their abuse comes full circle at the alteration of the last charge to â€Å"All creatures are equivalent, yet some are more equivalent than others† (p.85). Assignment 2 The Impact Of Educational Change And The Implications

Assignment 2 The Impact Of Educational Change And The Implications Assignment 2: The Impact Of Educational Change And The Implications For Your Teaching Practice â€" Assignment Example > AbstractAdult education in Australia continue to gain shape and momentum as the country’s adult population continues to blossom. Most adults in the country have been forced to balance the need to pursue post secondary education and work at the same time. This has led to the emergence of a new generation of learner known as “earner-learner” student. Majority of the students have therefore been forced to look for a learning approach that would lead to reduction of number of hours spent in learning institutions. In this regard, e-learning has offered a perfect platform for the Australian adult students to meet both their education and employment needs. It presents a whole new concept that promises to change the face of education system in the country. Key word: Adult education and e-learningIntroductionAustralia remains one of the countries in the world with attractive scenic beauty, vacation sports and well educated people. The population of the country is highly diversified d ue to high cases of cross-marriages. This diverse nature of the country’s population has over the years seen most citizens making numerous demands including the diversification of the education sector. There have been calls by the Australian citizens to the government and other stakeholders in the education sector to adopt new strategies on teaching and learning. One such area in the education sector that has attracted much interest is adult education. The adult education in Australia has increasingly become popular over the years. The increase has been influenced by various prevailing social, economic political factors in the country. Previous findings by past researchers have shown that the average life expectancy among the Australian people has increased over the years. For instance, due to improved lifestyles, most Australian citizens have been able to live longer. This has led to an increase in the numbers of adults in the country. Consequently, the demand for adult educati on has increased tremendously. According to Tennant and Morris (2001), 41% of Australian university students are adults aged 25 years and above with about 63% of the student population aged above 20 years. Even as the demand for adult education continues to increase Australia, there have been numerous emerging challenges. Researchers like Lipsitz (2003) have observed that the legal definition of who qualifies to be an adult student has been unclear. Another challenge has been the discomfort among the adult learners. Most adult learners find it uncomfortable to share the same learning environment with young students. Another school of though holds that appear to be out of practice with the requisite learning skills due to the break they have had from the forming learning system. This therefore affects their academic performance. In an argument by Tavangarian et al (2004), flexibility could be ranked as the top most challenge for an adult student within the formal learning environmen t. The proponents of this view observe that most adult students are tasked with the responsibility of attending to family and job matters while at the same time striving to attend to the demands of formal classes. This presents adult students with the challenge of divided attention thus affecting their academic performance.

Treating Bipolar Disorder in Adolescents - Free Essay Example

Severe mental disorders, such as bipolar disorder, have become more prevalent in children and adolescents over the last few decades, leading scientists, doctors, and parents to question whether medicating developing minds in adolescents is an effective and safe way to treat these disorders (Gaviria, Sayers, Hentoff, Wright, Lyman, 2008). This topic has remained controversial for years because there is no definitive way to diagnose bipolar disorder in adolescents, and it can be confusing to differentiate symptoms of hyperactivity, inability to focus, depression, aggression, and other symptoms as factors for mental illness or normal hormone development in youth. As more medications are developed to specifically treat bipolar disorder, there is a growing concern that children will suffer from cognitive decline, suicidal ideations, and overdose (Gaviria, Sayers, Hentoff, Wright, Lyman, 2008). However, some adolescents present with severe symptoms, indicating a need for medication to live as close to a normal life as possible. Thousands of studies have been conducted over the last ten years to evaluate different methods used to diagnose and treat bipolar disorder in adolescents. One of the main concerns is misdiagnosing pediatric patients, as many present symptoms with comorbid disorders, making it difficult to differentiate symptoms to effectively treat individuals (Birmaher, 2013). If a child presents with ADHD, bipolar disorder, and anxiety, the treatment becomes more complex as some symptoms are prevalent in each disorder. Another problem with diagnosing children with mental health disorders is how they are diagnosed. As the Frontline documentary stated, many children are evaluated by primary doctors and pediatricians instead of psychiatrists, which is of great concern because these professionals are not properly trained to diagnose more severe cases (Gaviria, Sayers, Hentoff, Wright, Lyman, 2008). This often results in overmedicating, which can lead to overdose, tics and twitches, depression, and sui cidal thoughts/ attempts. The current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is a tool used by mental health professionals to reference symptoms and properly diagnose adolescents with bipolar disorder. Although its not a definitive way to diagnose bipolar disorder, especially in children with less pervasive symptoms, the DSM-5 is more reliable than an evaluation with a pediatrician or general practitioner. Furthermore, the DSM-5 helps psychiatrists decide which medications will work best according to the symptomology of individuals. Its not a one-size-fits-all, and that becomes a problem when prescribing SSRIs, antipsychotics, atypical drugs, psychotropic drugs, and other medications (Romanelli, et al., 2009). The side effects from these medications have a wide range anywhere from general fatigue to suicidal ideations, and the results are grave for many children who are very young. Medicating children who present with varying degrees of bipolar disorder may be controversial, but evidence supports the efficacy of certain drugs like lurasidone and olanzapine (Dineen Wagner, 2018). Medication alone may be sufficient in extreme cases, but current research points to additional methods in the treatment of pediatric bipolar disorder. An evaluation of family history, substance abuse, trauma, comprehensive assessments, domestic violence, socioeconomic status, and parenting skills should all be evaluated when considering a bipolar disorder diagnosis (Romanelli, et al., 2009). Additionally, different types of behavioral therapy in conjunction with alternative treatments (yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, etc.) may help reduce the symptoms of bipolar disorder in adolescents. Further empirical research should be conducted to test certain drugs against placebos, in order to ensure efficacy and reliability. From a pharmacologic perspective, developing new drugs with less severe side effects would be greatly beneficial for young developing minds. References Birmaher, B. (2013, September 1). Family Planning - 2917 Words

Introduction Family planning is the planning of when to have children, and the use of birth control and other techniques to implement such plans. Other techniques commonly used include sexuality education, prevention and management of sexually transmitted infections, pre-conception counseling and management, and infertility management. Family planning is sometimes used in the wrong way also as a synonym for the use of birth control, though it often includes more. It is most usually applied to a female-male couple who wish to limit the number of children they have and/or to control the timing of pregnancy (also known as spacing children). Body Image in Brazil and Usa Free Essays

Body Image in Brazil and USA Four thousand years ago the last of the mammoths were roaming the earth before extinction, anesthesia was still 3800 years away from being discovered, and tools were still being made out of stone. What else was happening that long ago? Humans were performing the first known cases of reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries, documenting back to skin grafts in ancient India. Between the first documented procedures and the early 1800’s not a lot progressed aside from the basic tools being used. We will write a custom essay sample on Body Image in Brazil and Usa or any similar topic only for you Order Now In 1827, Dr. John Peter Mettaue performed the first cleft palate operation using tools of his own design kicking off the modern plastic surgery advancements. Using the advancements in reconstructive surgeries became increasingly popular during World War I as it was used to save many soldiers’ lives throughout the world. In the late 1940’s, following the second World War, the focus of plastic surgery began to shift from medical procedures to save lives in the military to a more public and socialized practice. A boom in the 1960’s spread rapidly after the introduction of silicone implants by Dr. Thomas Cronin. Sports Illustrated Magazine issued its first swim suit edition in 1964 featuring a five page spread of bikini clad perfect model bodies that the public was pressured to imitate. Despite the American involvement in Vietnam during the late 60’s the trend continued to increase into the 70’s when plastic surgery hit an all-time high due to the public discovery of its uses on all parts of the body. Over the decades, countries throughout the world including Brazil and The United States have adopted plastic surgery as an active part of their cultures despite monetary and health costs all because of media and social pressures. The United States and Brazil rank first and second in the world of most plastic surgery procedures, respectively. According to Dr. Daniela Dorneles de Andrade, a psychological research associate at the University of Vienna, the United States alone underwent 30. 1 million cosmetic surgeries in the year 2009, enough cosmetic surgeries for one in every ten Americans to have undergone some sort of altering procedure. The United States is the only country to top the next leading country, Brazil, which reported 13. 7 million procedures. Based on its population, that amounts to one in every fifteen Brazilians volunteering for of these surgeries in the same year (Dorneles 75). The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports the average cost of plastic surgery procedures being at five thousand dollars in the United States incurring a total revenue topping one hundred and fifty billion dollars a year from voluntary surgeries alone. The figure dwarfs Brazil’s reported income from the same procedures however, topping just over fifty million dollars (ASPS). Professor Alexander Edmonds, of Macquarie University, reports that the lack of funds reported by Brazil is due to a philosophy that â€Å"the poor have a right to be beautiful† (Edmonds, â€Å"Poor† 363). The thought that everyone has a right to undergo plastic surgery, even if they cannot afford it, has been adopted by many Brazilian surgeons. Brazilian surgeons have started clinics that are being funded by federal and municipal budgets to provide procedures to everyone regardless of economic ability (Edmonds, â€Å"Poor† 365). Such acts are not only costing people in American and Brazilian cultures money but also costing them their health. Both psychological and physical health are being put into jeopardy by the procedures themselves and also by the desire to have them done (Edmonds, â€Å"Learning† 470). Health care related spending has nearly tripled in the past three centuries, seventy-eight percent of which linked to complications of cosmetic surgery. Whether it is leaking silicone implants or infections, the surgeries that people are seeking out to make themselves more perfect on the outside are in fact leading to more problems than with what they started with (Dorneles 77). Why are people of the world putting themselves through these extensive procedures? University of Amsterdam professor, Alexander Edmonds, says it amounts to nothing more than acceptance and expectance. The pressure to appear as perfect as possible on the outside is largely placed upon the women in both Brazilian and American culture. Such pressure is put upon women, young women most heavily, by media and social groups alike. Social groups are driven by what they see in magazine or on television ads. Media thrives on what social groups are deeming appropriate amongst themselves. The vicious cycle of perfection that American teens and young adults face every day is the same pressure that is seen in Brazil. More and more young people are turning to evasive procedures to correct themselves every day. In 2010 the second most popular gift given to high school graduates in America, trailing closely behind a new car, was that of breast augmentations (Kreimer). These gifts are giving by family members or people who care about the young person’s life and they feel that their child will thrive better in life if they help them achieve a better body. This thinking is passed on from generation to the next and is rapidly increasing. One teen who received such a gift was quoted saying, â€Å"My mother, grandmother, two aunts, and stepmother have implants, so if my mom is willing to pay for it, why not? † (qtd in Kriemer). The pressure to appear a certain way is becoming even more important to people of the world with no consideration for the health and financial implications. It is becoming accepted by cultures around the globe as a normal practice. If the past is any indication for the future this issue will become an uncontrollable epidemic. Something needs to be done about how media portrays people but are the thoughts of societies and morals of cultures being influenced by the media or is the media being conformed by the cultures and societies serves? The Organizational Behavior & Operations-Free-Samples for Students

Question: Analyse the Various way to Organizational Behavior and Operations. Answer: Introduction An organization consists of many factors, such as, the human resource, functionality, capability, process dynamics, and many more. The organizational behaviour, culture, hierarchy and leadership of the management influence the performance of the organization. These can influence the performance of the organization in a positive as well as in a negative way. The following essay focuses on various aspects of an organization, from where problems can arise, and reflects upon the different dimensions through annotated bibliography. 5 scholarly articles are reviewed here to reflect upon different organizational problems through the viewpoints of the authors. The fundamental concept of this article is to analyze the ways of sharing of the governing knowledge in organizations. This also includes the different levels for analyzing, mechanisms of governance and directions of research. In the context of different ways for analyzing organization, the authors have explained that, organizational analysis represents the method of reviewing the organizational development, workplace environment, personnel and the operations of an organization. The analyses of an organization should be conducted on a regular basis as it helps in identifying the inefficiencies or shortfall of the business that have emerged in the system and find out ways to resolve them. The structure and design of the organizational system and how it affects the production capacity and functionality of the organization are the focus of the analyses of the organization. The authors in this book have also noted down different ways for analyzing organizations and those are, Strategic T riangle Model, SWOT analysis, McKinsey 7s Model, Rational Model, Natural System Model, Sociotechnical Model, Cognitive Model and Meta Model. These are different models that analyses the functionality of an organization. The book also addresses another important factor in organizational analyses, namely, Organizational Network Analysis (ONA). This represents the process of studying the formal organizational communication for developing a pattern of information flow and collaboration among vital groups. Organizational behaviour represents the study of the behaviour of individuals or groups within an organization. This includes their attitude, understanding, communications and actions. The authors in their paper have analyzed the individual and group behaviour within an organization. The organizational behaviour is an important factor in deterring the organization culture and it affects the performance of the organization. The authors cited from Leigh Thompson that organizational behaviour is the study of the patterns of thoughts, behaviour and feelings of the individuals and the groups within the organization, and how these are influenced by the actual, imagined and implied presence of other people. They have depicted that individuals are the foundation of any organization; hence, their characteristics form the organizational characteristics. Contradiction arises when the needs of the individuals differ from that of the organization. Groups are formed by individuals. They have their own structure, functionality, leaders and hierarchy. The group pressure influences the capabilities and performance of the individuals in the group. The organizational structure is formed to create a relationship between the individuals and the groups to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization. The authors have taken 87 samples for meta analysis process and examined the relationships within the five factor model on organizational citizenship behaviour and personality traits. Organizational effectiveness refers to the concept of the efficiency of achieving the desired outcome of an organization. The key areas of organizational effectiveness are talent management, organizational structure and design, leadership development, measurement design, change implementation and transformation, applying smart technology for managing a firms human resources and achieving the goals of the organization. The authors have focused on the importance of individual and group behavior in achieving the efficiency of an organization in their journal publication. The behavior determines the organizational culture. If there is a positive vibe among the management and employees, a healthy relationship develops and the employees are motivated to perform well. In the situation of increasing competition, a healthy work environment is necessary for growth and the individual and group behavior influence this culture. The individual influence of the leaders of an organization on the eff iciency and effectiveness of business strategies is determined by the values. The behavior of people also affects the stability, credibility, and variability of the internal and external environmental factors of an organization. This was tested by the authors through a sampling of 40 top level managers or organizational founders. The authors also examined different types of organizational culture that may exist in an organization and its effects on organizational efficiency and effectiveness. An organization runs on various dynamic processes. There are power, politics, conflict, decision making and change that affect the operations of an organization. In this context, Thomas, Sargent and Hardy (2011) have published a paper on managing the organizational change and the dynamic processes that exist within an organization. The above mentioned dynamics are very important in an organization, as those influence the hierarchies and organizational culture. Every organization has a political pyramid, which is the foundation of hierarchy. In this pyramidal structure, the organizations provide scope for career development and also provide a platform for expressing individual motives and interests. The opportunities of career development, specifically at the high managerial positions, majorly depend on the accumulation of political power within the organization and the ability of transforming the individual interests into influential activities. With this structure, the competition f or power arrives in the organization. Since, scarcity exists in the economy, a person cannot gain power just by asking for it, rather he has to compete and sometimes participate in the organizational politics to be able to gain a position. Similarly, the conflicts in the organizations can happen between the teams or between the management and the employees, and this hampers the operations of a business. People, who get involved in the internal conflicts, cannot perform efficiently and that affects individual as well as organizational performance. The decision making policies are also important factor in an organizational process. The direction of the activities and production process is controlled by the decision making abilities of the organization. The authors have focused on identifying two different patterns in organizational negotiations, which are constituted by specific communicative practices adopted in the organization. They have also focused on how changes can be implement ed and how it can affect the business operations. The managerial roles and leadership play a very major role in organizational performance. Yafang Tsai has illustrated in his paper (2011) the relationship between organizational culture, leadership behavior and job satisfaction that, the management of an organization has the major power in motivating the employees and improving the performance of the individuals as well as of the organization. The author have focused on various aspects of organizational culture, leadership in an organizational and performance of the employees and also addressed how these aspects are connected. Organizational culture refers to a set of rules that directs the behavior of the employees through attitude, words, interpersonal relationships, and it also includes leadership, because, it helps in shaping the future of the organization. A good relation between these factors ensures increased productivity of the employees. Depending on the organizational structure, a suitable leadership style is followed. The author has also cited that, when an organization has good managers and good leaders, then the employees are influenced positively and motivated to perform well. The leaders through their charismatic capability influence the people to push themselves to perform better. At the same time, when an employee performs well, he gets recognition and thereby his job satisfaction increases. To prove his point, Tsai has conducted a cross sectional study and performed a quantitative analysis. It has been found from the study that the leadership has a very important influence on the job satisfaction of the employees in the organization. When the leaders take the effort to make a communication with the employees, they feel motivated to perform better and their job satisfaction increases. Overall Summary And Conclusions From the first source, it can be found that, there are various ways for analyzing the organizational behavior and operations, and several models have been made for that purpose. The key factor of the above mentioned book is that, the authors have focused on the research of knowledge process and role of the organization in the process of governing knowledge. However, the review provides little support for proposing the mechanisms of formal governance in the organizations. Among different ways of analyzing organizations, the authors focused on only one type for governance knowledge sharing mechanism. From the second source, it can be stated that, according to the authors, the individual behavior depends on the persons ability and motivation to perform. This behavior influences the group behavior, which in turn influences the organizational culture. For detailed analysis, the authors used meta analysis tests by taking 87 samples and investigated the relationships among the five factor model on personality traits and organizational citizenship behavior. According to the third source, the effectiveness of organization has been focused on by the authors. There are many key areas in the organizational operations, which help in achieving the efficiency. The authors have addressed the importance of individual and group behavior in achieving the efficiency of an organization in the journal publication. It has been found that, individual behavior directs the group behavior, which in turn determines and directs the organizational behavior. On the other hand, the group behavior influences the individual behavior, especially for the new employees. The authors have examined this by using a sampling of 40 managers, supervisors and organizational founders. This publication is helpful in evaluating the effect of peoples behavior on the effectiveness of an organization. They have found through data analysis that organizational behavior and culture are related to some of the dimensions of organizational effectiveness. The fourth source addressed that there are various dynamic processes that control the organizational behavior as well as the problems in the organization. Those processes include power, politics, conflict, decision making and change in the system. Through power, politics, conflict and decision making, there can be huge change in the organization. At the same time, when required, many changes need to be implemented in the organization strategies, to grow in the industry. This is also a dynamic process in the organizational structure. The authors have depicted the effects of changes on the organizational behavior. Thus, this paper is useful to gain an insight about various dynamic processes within an organization that influence the operations. Finally, the last source has addressed the very important relationship between the cultures of the organizational, leadership and job satisfaction of the employees. The authors have shown that these elements are inter-related. A good relation between these factors ensures increased productivity of the employees. Depending on the situation and organizational culture, the managements chooses a suitable leadership style, such as, transformational or charismatic. Through efficient leadership, employees can be motivated to perform well. The author has used scientific data analysis to support his notion. It has been found from the study that the leadership has a very important influence on the job satisfaction of the employees in the organization. Thus, it can be concluded that through annotated bibliography it is easier to explain a concept of the subject. Through the publication of various authors, a particular topic can be referred to explain. In this paper, various concepts of organizational aspects are explained by using annotated bibliography. Various scholarly articles were reviewed to throw a light on the authors perspective to understand the topic in a better way. It has been found that, there are multiple ways of analyzing organizations, individual and group behavior and its effects on organizational culture, various process dynamics and leadership and job satisfaction factors are all important aspects, which can influence the organizational performance. Theme of Harrison Bergeron

Vonnegut’s story, Harrison Bergeron highlights the perils of governmental control coupled with people’s ignorance. Vonnegut goes ahead to predict the results of such a move. The most striking theme is that of lack of freedom in American society. Vonnegut also explicates how loss of civil rights is catching with Americans. What is the result of all these? There is a high probability that America will end up in a dystopia. In summary, Vonnegut talks of how loss of freedom and civil rights would lead to America’s dystopia.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Theme of Harrison Bergeron specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More As aforementioned, Americans love freedom and this is evidenced by Harrison’s actions; he escapes from prison, goes ahead to remove his handicaps and finally tries to influence those around him. â€Å"Why don’t you stretch out on the sofa, so that you can rest your handic ap bag†¦?† (Vonnegut Page 216). The government chained this handicap bag around George’s neck; however, Harrison is telling George to ‘rest’ it, as a sign of rebellion and push for freedom. Nevertheless, in Harrison’s world, this freedom is no more and people cannot make choices because they are above average in everything and as a result, they are handicapped. For instance, the dancers are cloaked to ensure that, â€Å"nobody would feel like something the cat drug in† (Vonnegut Page 216). The fact that all people are above average in everything takes away freedom of choice and hampers everyone in the new dystopia America. The idea of neglect of freedom of choice is also expressed in the article of Clark. The author argues that â€Å"Uninformed citizens are left vulnerable to the political exploitation of special-interests† (Clark, 1). This proves that despite the love of Americans to freedom, their freedom of choice is restricte d due to the lack of information. Loss of civil rights is another contributing factor towards this dystopia in America. Everyone is equal â€Å"due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution†¦the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General† (Vonnegut Page 218). In this state, the ‘Handicapper General’ ensures everyone is equal and he or she has no right including right to life. George says, â€Å"Two years in prison and two thousand dollars fine for every ball I took out† (Vonnegut Page 216). George here talks of the consequences of removing the ‘handicap’ that the government has placed around his neck, evidence of loss of civil rights. George even watches her daughter die on television and he cannot complain leave alone filling a suit. All these events resonate well with what is happening in America today. The issue of loss of civil rights by American citizens is discussed by Manson in one of his articles, which is devoted to mind control. The author gives multiple â€Å"evidence for government involvement in attempts to control people’s behavior† (Manson, 1). The mind control conspiracy theory proves the intrusion of the government to people’s personal lives and even to their consciousness. This is an obvious violation of basic civil rights defined by the Constitution.Advertising Looking for essay on american literature? Let's see if we can help you! Even though Vonnegut wrote this story many years ago, he had seen what was lurking; for instance, after the 9/11 events, congress passed the US Patriot Act that allowed security agencies to probe personal issues. This resonates well with, â€Å"the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper Gen eral† (Vonnegut Page216). Even though loss of freedom in contemporary America is not as bad as in Harrison’s society, American authorities are slowly taking away freedom. For instance, smoking regulations placed public places is a move of its kind. To this Vonnegut would say, â€Å"Some things about living still aren’t quite right. The ‘rightness’ of living is disappearing slowly as people lose freedom and head to the new dystopia America. Indeed, the freedom of Americans is being gradually lost. According to Manson, even the right for individual opinions is being violated, and as a result of the government activity is such that â€Å"a person simply becomes a pair of eyes designed to observe and transmit data†. This serves as an evidence of American citizens being deprived of their rights for freedom. In summary, Vonnegut tries to highlight how government control would slowly convert America into a dystopia nation. Despite the love that Am ericans have for freedom, Vonnegut is afraid that this is being taken away and people will have, â€Å"a little mental handicap radio in their ears tuned to a government transmitter† (Vonnegut Page 218). This would take away freedom and civil rights would suffer the same fate for those who rebel against the set ordinances will have, â€Å"ten seconds to get their handicaps back on† (Vonnegut Page 219). The overall effect in this situation would be a nation where all people are equal according to government standards hence dystopia. The take home point in Vonnegut’s short story is, people should come out of their ignorance, take action and correct government errors; otherwise, America will be a place of parity without dreams and competition hence dystopia America. Two Reasons Why it is Important to Analyze Han and Roman Attitudes Toward Technology

Two Reasons Why it is Important to Analyze Han and Roman Attitudes Toward TechnologyThere are a number of ways to analyze Han and Roman attitudes toward technology. In studying history, one must often base their decisions on historical materials. In this article, I will discuss three reasons why it is important to learn about these people. The first reason is that the two Roman emperors developed a close relationship with a great English scientist. During the middle ages, it was common for scientists to be highly skilled artisans. Even in the day when the Renaissance began, many scholars practiced herbal medicine. Furthermore, the concept of using technology for medicine was very common among herbalists. For example, the Cambridge College of Physicians established the Medical College at the University of Paris to study herbal medicine. It is interesting to note that the father of Albertus Magnus, who developed such doctor's rule, was from the city of Cologne, Germany. It may not be sur prising that the young Albertus traveled to England to become an apprentice to the famous Thomas Sydenham. He studied under him for several years and became the third Earl of Leicester. We all know that the Han Chinese lived in a very large and very wide range of societies. They spent most of their time in the cities, making them important businessmen. This brings up the question of why there were so many large cities and so many science fairs and plays, but when Rome conquered China, they never developed any long distance traveling.People have looked at China and wondered why there were such an alternative arts and literature. The Han and Romans spent little time in the countryside, as the majority of their time was spent in the cities. As a result, the Han engaged in a huge number of 'alternative' forms of transportation. They did so because the concept of using mathematics, philosophy, religion, and rhetoric to govern society was new at the time. Maimonides recognized the role of r eligion in education and commerce. This was a time when China and Japan were a part of the entire civilization of the East. We cannot determine how these two empires would have developed if their histories had been documented. But there was one fact, however, that is easily demonstrated. If we are to have a perfect understanding of history, we must keep in mind how one of the most advanced civilizations of the ancient world practiced culture and communications for more than a millennium.

Definition and Examples of Parrhesia

Definition and Examples of Parrhesia In classical rhetoric, parrhesia is free, frank, and fearless speech. In ancient Greek thought, speaking with parrhesia meant saying everything or speaking ones mind. An intolerance of parrhesia, notes S. Sara Monoson, marked tyranny of both the Hellenic and Persian varieties in the Athenian view. . . . The coupling of freedom and parrhesia in the democratic self-image . . . functioned to assert two things: the critical attitude appropriate to a democratic citizen, and the open life promised by democracy (Platos Democratic Entanglements, 2000). Examples and Observations The author of [Rhetorica] ad Herennium discussed a figure of thought called parrhesia (frankness of speech). This figure occurs when, talking before those to whom we owe reverence or fear, we yet exercise our right to speak out, because we seem justified in reprehending them, or persons dear to them, for some fault (IV xxxvi 48). For example: The university administration has tolerated hate speech on this campus, and so to some extent they are responsible for its widespread use. An opposing figure is litotes(understatement), where a rhetor diminishes some feature of the situation that is obvious to all.(Sharon Crowley and Debra Hawhee, Ancient Rhetorics for Contemporary Students. Pearson, 2004)To best reflect the meanings in its own context, parrhesia should be thought of as true speech: the parrhesiastes is the one who speaks the truth. Parrhesia required that the speaker use the most direct words and expressions possible in order to make it clear that whatever he might be saying wa s his own opinion. As a speech activity, parrhesia was largely limited to male citizens.(Kyle Grayson, Chasing Dragons. University of Toronto Press, 2008) What is basically at stake in parrhesia is what could be called, somewhat impressionistically, the frankness, freedom, and openness, that leads one to say what one has to say, as one wishes to say it, when one wishes to say it, and in the form one thinks is necessary for saying it. The term parrhesia is so bound up with the choice, decision, and attitude of the person speaking that the Latins translated it by, precisely, libertas [speaking freely].(Michel Foucault, The Hermeneutics of the Subject: Lectures at the College de France 19811982. Macmillan, 2005)The Fearless Speech of Malcolm XMalcolm X is the great example of parrhesia in the black prophetic tradition. The term goes back to line 24A of Platos Apology, where Socrates says, the cause of my unpopularity was my parrhesia, my fearless speech, my frank speech, my plain speech, my unintimidated speech. The hip hop generation talks about keeping it real. Malcolm was as real as it gets. James Brown talked about make it funky. Malc olm was always. Bring in the funk, bring in the truth, bring in the reality. . . .When Malcom looked at black life in America, he saw wasted potential; he saw unrealized aims. This kind of prophetic witness can never be crushed. There was no one like him in terms of having the courage to risk life and limb to speak such painful truths about America.(Cornel West, Firebrand. Smithsonian, February 2015) Eisenhower on the Military-Industrial ComplexWe annually spend on military security alone more than the net income of all United States corporations. Now this conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influenceeconomic, political, even spiritualis felt in every city, every Statehouse, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet, we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources, and livelihood are all involved. So is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an aler t and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together. . . .Disarmament, with mutual honor and confidence, is a continuing imperative. Together we must learn how to compose differences, not with arms, but with intellect and decent purpose. Because this need is so sharp and apparent, I confess that I lay down my official responsibilities in this field with a definite sense of disappointment. As one who has witnessed the horror and the lingering sadness of war, as one who knows that another war could utterly destroy this civilization which has been so slowly and painfully built over thousands of years, I wish I could say tonight that a lasting peace is in sight.Happily, I can say that war has been avoided. Steady progress toward our ultimate goal has been made. But so much remains to be done.(President Dwight Eisenhower, Farewell Address , January 17, 1961) Straight Talk as a Rhetorical TropeI read S. Sara Monosons excellent work on parrhesia (frank speech) in ancient Athens. I thought, this is itwe can use this ethic of parrhesia as our own democratic ideal! But then I began to notice that our popular culture in fact already praised something like parrhesia: straight talk. Political theorists also have a similar ethic: sincerity. But the problem was that a lot of straight-talkers seemed deeply undemocratic: straight talk seemed to have become a trope, another tool of crafty politicians and smart advertising executives.(Elizabeth Markovits, The Politics of Sincerity: Plato, Frank Speech, and Democratic Judgment. The Pennsylvania State University Press, 2008)
